Messer, 33, was killed in service near Konigshafen, Germany, by enemy sniper fire on April 5, 1945. He is survived by his wife, Hattie Messer, one son, James Edward Messer, and two daughters, Ruby Jane and Freddie Sue Messer, all of Wedowee, Rt. 2; one brother, John Messer, of LaGrange; four half- brothers, Hood Messer, of Atlanta, Worth and Oss Messer, of Woodland, and Ross Messer, of Florida; one sister, Miss Clentis Messer, of LaGrange; two half- sisters, Mrs. Willie Mae Traylor, of LaGrange, and Mrs. Amie Wright, of Heflin. Funeral services were held from the Levins Baptist Church at 3 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, the Rev. R. V. Jensen and the Rev. W. L. Reeves officiating. Interment was in Levins cemetery, with full military honors by VFW Post 6571, of Wedowee, and with Roanoke Funeral Home directing.
