William M. “Bill” Barker, 94, of Murray, Ky., formerly of Bowdon, Ga., died Dec. 23, 2007. Mr. Barker was born in Wedowee on Oct. 27, 1913. He retired with the Murray Electric System in 1979 as superintendent. He attended the First Methodist Church in Murray and was a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Charolette Barker of Murray; daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Bob Arnold of Frankfort, Ky.; one grandchild; and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Wheeler Barker and Beuna Traylor Barker; two sisters, Mary Watkins and Merlie Brown; and a brother, John Barker. Funeral services will be Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the graveside, Murray City Cemetery, with the Rev. Chuck Shuffett officiating. J.H. Churchill Funeral Home, Murray. ________ J.B. Henderson (HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.) J.B. Henderson, 79, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, at after a long battle with both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Corinth, Miss., on Nov 15, 1928. He played both high school and college football. He attended Hinds Junior College and then Auburn University. He graduated from Auburn University in 1951 with a degree in industrial engineering. After graduating, he took a job with General Electric, which took him all over the Northeast and finally to Hendersonville in 1955. After one last move, in 1966-1968, working in the GE plant in Erie, Penn., he worked the remainder of his career in Hendersonville as manager of manufacturing. He was an active member of the Hendersonville Church of Christ, serving as an elder for 25 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He served on the board of trustees of Pardee Hospital for many years. He was an avid bridge player, but above all, he put God and his wife and family first in everything he did in his life. Preceding him in death were his parents, Clovis and Verda Henderson; his sisters, Dorothy and Hazel Jane; and his daughter Ellen Henderson Neal. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille May Henderson, formerly of Roanoke; his two daughters, Jane Henderson Bryant of Birmingham and Lisa Henderson Curtis of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and his son, Joe Henderson of Dalton, Mass.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday Dec. 29, at Hendersonville Church of Christ with Minister Jerry Senn officiating. Mrs. Harmon was born Dec. 11, 1933, daughter of Luther and Connie Manley Perry. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church and had been a convenience store clerk. Mrs. Harmon was preceded in death by three daughters, Jennifer Arrington, Delilah Rather and Renee Akins; three brothers, Hugh, Thomas and Verlie Perry; and five sisters, Avis Edmondson, Doris Huey, Mildred Kent, Marie Albright and Jo Cofield. Benefield Funeral Home, Roanoke. ________ Hugh Wilmot Egerton (BIRMINGHAM) Hugh Wilmot Egerton of Birmingham, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hoyt Enloe Egerton, formerly of Wedowee; son, Hugh Enloe Egerton of Ludwigshafen, Germany; daughter, Kathleen Egerton Harkey of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Wilmot Egerton Sr. and Florence White Egerton. Born Dec. 29, 1915, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was a most kind man, and a beloved son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and friend. Mr. Egerton graduated in the first class of Ramsey High School (Birmingham) and from Birmingham Southern College, earning a BA in English in 1937. He had a distinguished career in the U.S. Postal Service, beginning as a substitute mail clerk and ending his career as acting postmaster for Birmingham. In 1942 he was recruited as the youngest member of the first class of Professional Postal Inspectors known as the "silent investigators." His first assignment was Kentucky. He was transferred to the Birmingham office in 1947 and continued as a postal inspector until promoted in 1968 to assistant postmaster. He retired in 1972, having been acting Birmingham postmaster for two years. Formerly an active member of Trinity Methodist Church, he served on the board, taught Sunday school and sang in the men's choir. He and Mrs. Egerton were parent leaders for the Birmingham Youth Orchestra during the 1960s and active members of the Concordia Dance Club for 20 years. He loved Birmingham and was pleased to return to Highlands Avenue, where he also spent his youth. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Birmingham Southern College scholarship fund. Mr. McCain was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Randolph County, Ala., the son of the late Myrtle Lee Huey McCain and the late Olin Grady McCain. Mr. McCain retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years at the rank of first sergeant and then retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections with 20 years of service. He was Baptist by faith. Medical Center Extended Care Center. She was born on April 3, 1921. in Roanoke. daughter of William Ezekiel Prince and Carrie Maud Prince. Marvalene grew up in Roanoke and was married to Woodie Wyatt Philpott. They lived together in Roanoke until moving to Mableton. Ga., following her husband's career change. Along with her husband, Marvalene was employed in the textile business early in her career and then worked as a bookkeeper. She was a faithful member of South Cobb. Church of Christ for many years and a gentle caregiver for her numerous great-grandchildren and other friends. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling children's stories. Marvalene is survived by a brother. James Dorsey Prince of Mableton; a daughter, Alecia Davis; two granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband and siblings Gaynell Kelly, Cora Laney, Garvis Prince, Bama King and Alwyn Prince. Born Nov. 5, 1909, she was preceded in death by her father, Hoyt Enloe; mother, Ellen Mooty Enloe, both of Wedowee; and two sisters, Nell Howard Smith and Kathleen Enloe Forsyth. Surviving are: one son, Hugh Enloe Egerton, Mannheim, Germany; daughter, Kathleen Egerton Harkey, Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Egerton graduated at 16 from Randolph County High School. She attended two years at Maryville College, Tenn., and graduated in 1931 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, her beloved Auburn. She attended graduate school at Columbia University in New York City and worked both as a teacher and home demonstration agent in Jefferson County. She and Hugh married April 3, 1938, in Birmingham, where she worked. Her passion for everything Auburn was only equal to her love of family, living and ancestral, friends, gardening, birds, dancing, sewing and painting. She was a member for over 50 years of her garden club, Trinity Methodist Church, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Concordia Dance Club and the Golden Eagles of Auburn. She and Hugh received tender and loving care from the staff at Greenbriar at the Altamont, for which the family is very grateful. She volunteered with the South Carolina Department of Education to review and recommend textbooks for schools. Alecia was a Master Waste Educator sponsored by Clemson University. She was a founding member of the Lexington Library. Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee. ________ Patriot Ward Johnson (BROOKLYN, N.Y.) Patriot Ward Johnson, a longtime resident of West Point, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at her home in Brooklyn. She was 85 years old. Mrs. Johnson was born in Wadley, Ala., on Aug. 31, 1922, the fifth child and youngest daughter of Bannie Allen Ward and William Lumpkin Ward. The family later moved to Langdale, where Mrs. Johnson met her future husband, Willie Lee Johnson. The couple was married in 1940 and moved to West Point in 1955. Mrs. Johnson became the secretary to the principal of West Point Elementary School and then was appointed Troup County executive for the American Red Cross, where she served with great distinction for many years. After her retirement, Mrs. Johnson studied literature, history and political science at Southern Union Community College in Valley and became an inveterate traveler, visiting many parts of North America and Europe with family members and with her much younger classmates. She moved to New York in 2006. For most of her life, Mrs. Johnson was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of West Point, where she sang alto in the choir and taught a popular and deeply influential Sunday school class for young adults. An avid golfer, she was for many years a member of the Riverside Country Club and a mainstay of regional amateur competitions. She did volunteer work for the West Point Literacy Council and was active in local and state politics, working tirelessly in Jimmy Carter's campaigns. Later in life, she became a researcher and, with her daughter, co-authored the book "State Crime, the Media and the Invasion of Panama" (Praeger Series in Political Communication; Greenwood Press, 1994). Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Christopher Johnson of Brooklyn; her daughter, Christina Jacqueline Johns of Patterson Island, Ga.; two granddaughters; her brother, Bob Ward of Aledo, Texas; and her longtime companion, Marie Holloway of Lanett. Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee. ________ Kathy Taylor Kirk (WADLEY) Services for Kathy Taylor Kirk, 54. of Wadley were Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Hope Memorial Christian Church, with the Rev. Bobby Burroughs and the Rev. Jimmy Brand officiating. Burial followed at Wadley Cemetery. Mrs. Kirk died Thursday, Jan, 24, at Randolph Medical Center. Survivors include her husband, Douglas Kirk of Wadley; one daughter, Teresa Adams of Wadley; one son, Tommy Kirk of Roanoke; her parents, Paul and Mae Parrish of Wadley; four grandchildren; one sister, Sybil Stephens of Wadley; and two brothers, Mike Taylor of Roanoke and Gene Taylor of LaFayette. Pallbearers were Ronnie Clark Sr., Paul Wilkerson, Donnie Knight, Scott Stewart, Ronald Caldwell and Donald Caldwell. Jerry Stephens and Ricky Noles served as honorary pallbearers. A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Kirk was born March 23, 1953, daughter of Durwood and Mae Knight Taylor. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a member of Hope Memorial Christian Church, and a member of Randolph County Rescue Squad. She had owned and operated Kirk's Florist of Wadley for 30 years. Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. ________ Flora L. Wright (WEDOWEE) Services for Flora L. Wright, 95. of Wedowee were Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Leven's Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joe Bob Traylor and the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Miss Wright died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Clay County Hospital. Survivors include five nephews and nieces, Ned Wright and Wyatt Wright III of Wedowee, Julia Ann Joyner of Newnan, Ga., JoAnne Clarkson of Clay County, and Bill Clarkson; a sister-in-law, Inez Wright of Wedowee; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. Pallbearers were Jimmy McCain, Donald McCullers, Carl Nelson Jr., Wayne Taylor, Robert Cox, Wallace Lee, Charles Perry, Larry Messer and Terry Graham. Miss Wright was born June 18, 1912, daughter of Wyatt and Bertha Capehart Wright Sr. She was a member of Leven's Baptist Church and taught high school math for Randolph County Schools. Miss Wright was a member of the Wedowee Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wyatt Wright Jr. and Charles William Wright; one sister, Isabelle Clarkson; and one nephew, Barry Wright.
