SHAFFER GOES TO REWARD ---------------------------- This community is again saddened over the loss of one of our oldest and best citizens -- the faithful consort of Rev. John P. SHAFFER, who so shortly preceeded [sic] the wife to the final home of the good. Last Thursday morning, June 10th -- just one month to the day after the death of her husband -- Mrs. J. P. SHAFFER passed away. She closed her eyes upon the scenes of time in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Guy H. HANDLEY, where Dr. SHAFFER breathed his last. The deceased had been in feeble health for several months, and after losing the companion of her heart and life, had longed to go and be with those long loved, “though lost awhile.” In patient resignation, and the full confidence of the christian’s [sic] hope, she waited for her chance to come. Mrs. SHAFFER was an elect lady. She exemplified in a long life of nearly 71 years the rarest christian [sic] graces. She carried with her the sunshine of good cheer, and was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. The writer’s earliest recollections of Roanoke are freighted with kindly memories of this sainted woman. She and her worthy companion were neighbors and friends of the good old people who blessed our home in the years agone, before it was invaded by death. That many hearts felt a personal loss in the death of Mrs. SHAFFER was attested by the manifold acts and expressions of sympathy and in the large congregation that thronged the Baptist church at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, when the funeral services were conducted. As the choir sang of the “Home of the soul” and the meeting again on the shores of that land where partings ne’er come, the minds of all were turned to a similar scene, so short a time before, when the spirit of Dr. SHAFFER was conducted to the heavenly shore, there to wait and watch her coming. Rev. W. T. DAVIS, of Lineville [Clay Co., AL], offered prayer, and Rev. S. L. DOBBS, of the Methodist church, read the Scripture lesson from the Psalms. Rev. J. W. HAMNER, of Ashland [Clay Co., AL], delivered the funeral oration. It was clothed in language of simple beauty and bore a sincere tribute to the life and character of this honored “Mother in Israel.” Revs. A. S. BRANNAN and T. J. PORTER in like manner each offered a touching tribute to her memory. The funeral procession then proceeded to the city cemetery, where the remains of this good woman, whose life had meant so much to her friends, were laid to rest by the side of her late husband. The world is poorer that one less mother’s prayers and presence are here to bless, but the home beyond has gained an added treasure, that will allure her loved ones to the final goal, where all the faithful shall gather at last.
