HODGES DIED AT RADNEY'S CHAPEL SUN. ---------------------------- Sunday [23 Mar 1919] Mrs. Thomas W. [Wilson] HODGES [Mattie PINCKARD HODGES, born 8 Feb 1865, headstone lists 22 Mar 1919 as death date] died at her home near Radney's Chapel. She had been afflicted with heart trouble, but was not considered seriously ill at the time. The remains of this good woman were interred at Concord [Primitive Baptist Church cemetery] at 11 o'clock Monday morning, after services conducted by Rev. I. F. HAWKINS. The nine children, with all the grandchildren of the deceased, were present, also a large concourse of friends. Deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist church. ---------------------------- CARD OF THANKS ---------------------------- We take this method of expressing our thanks to our neighbors and friends, and our physicians, who ministered to us so faithfully in the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother. May God's richest blessings ever rest on each of them. T. W. [Thomas Wilson] HODGES [5 Sep 1865--31 Jan 1931] and Children. [Children include Mary Eunice HODGES POORE, 26 Mar 1893--9 Sep 1933; also interred at Concord] [Both from The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 26 Mar 1919, p.1] -------------------------- RESOLUTIONS. -------------------------- We, the members of Lily Grove No. 175, Woodman [sic -- Woodmen] Circle, Mt. Zion Ala., extend to the bereaved family of Sov. T. W. HODGES our greatest sympathy and condolence in this, their dark hour of grief. Sov. Mattie HODGES died March 22, 1919. Their home is shadowed in sorrow, our Grove has lost a faithful member. She was loyal to her chosen craft. She served as Chaplain since 1916. Death has closed her eyes and silenced her lips, and that warm heart is wrapped in eternal stillness. Let us bow in humble submission to the will of the Almighty and remind the sorrowing ones that he [He] looks down with compassion upon them in the hour of their desolation. "We loved her -- Yes, we loved her, But the angels loved her more, For they have sweetly called her To yonder's shining shore." Therefore, be it resolved: 1st, That in the death of Sovereign Mattie HODGES our Grove has lost a loyal member and the family a devoted wife and mother. 2nd, That our forest be draped in mourning for 30 days. 3rd, That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Grove, and a copy be sent to The Roanoke Leader for publication. Ina L. REAVES, Grace SWANN, Nannie HODGES, Committee.
