The accident occurred on Stone Ave. in Lowell, where Mr. Nelson was making milk deliveries for Dairyland Farms. So far as Roanoke police know, there were no witnesses to the accident. The evidence indicates that Mr. Nelson drove the truck to the top of a hill and stopped, or attempted to stop, to make a delivery. Apparently, a brake failure caused he truck to roll backward down the very steep hill for about 75 yards. It left the road and rolled up a small incline before striking a utility pole, which it snapped. It appeared to investigating officers that when the truck struck the pole, Mr. Nelson was thrown out, only to be crushed to death when the truck overturned on him. His death appeared to have been instantaneous. Damage to the truck was surprisingly slight. According to officers, this same dairy truck was involved in another fatal accident near Roanoke several months ago. Horace Vinson died in a local hospital a few days after the truck left the road with him in an early morning accident. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrl Nelson, and 2 sons, Jerry and Kenneth Nelson, of Roanoke Rt. 3; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Nelson of Newell Rt. 1; 6 brothers, Carl and Jesse Nelson of Newell Rt. 1, Hermit Nelson of Wedowee, J. D. Nelson of Rock Mills, and Elmore and Lonnie Ray Nelson of LaGrange; 4 sisters, Mrs. Howard McCain of Wedowee, Mrs. Annie Mae Kerr of Huntsville, Mrs. Marvis McCain of Wedowee Rt. 1, and Mrs. Betty Jane Stewart of Bowdon. Funeral services for Mr. Nelson were conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Levins Baptist Church by Rev. A. F. Pope, Rev. J. T. Dykes, and Rev. Wallace Bell Jr. Burial was in the church cemetery.
