The event occurred at his home at Cambridge, North Randolph; the interment was in the [Masonic] cemetery at Wedowee Friday. If Mr HEFLIN had lived three month[s] longer he would have been 86 years of age. Soon after the [Civil] war he represented his district in congress. At one time the House adjourned to hear him sing, in his inimitable style, one of the old-time melodies. All in all, his career was a remarkable one. His passing away leaves but one member living of the old HEFLIN family -- Dr W L HEFLIN, of this city [Roanoke], who was with his brother in his last days. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 30 Jan 1901, p.3] -------------------------- LOCAL NEWS --------------------------- Hon. Robert Steel [Stell] HEFLIN, of Randolph County, who died at his home near Wedowee a few days ago, in the 86th year of his age, was at one time a power in the politics of that county. He was a fine stump speaker, a good campaigner, and possessed a jovial and hearty manner which made him universally popular with his people. He served several terms in the State Legislature, was Probate Judge of the county, and served one term in Congress. When the [Civil] war came on, he was not in harmony with the majority and to a great extent lost his influence and popularity. He was an intense Republican after the war closed. For many years he has lived quietly at his home and taken no active part in political or public affairs. As one of the old landmarks of his section, and as a man who in his day had rendered the State much good service, we can cheerfully draw a veil over his faults and failings and speak of his better qualities.
