The fatal accident occurred about 3:05 Monday afternoon inside the city limits on the LaFayette highway near the First Baptist Church (colored). Frances and fifty or more other students were walking toward town from school, on their left side of the highway, according to highway safety rules. Before crossing the highway to go to her home on Oak Street, Frances started a game of tag with a playmate and probably became so interested in it that she failed to look for traffic as she started to cross the highway. She was struck by a Buick sedan driven by Captain William James, of Ft. McClellan, and traveling in the direction of LaFayette at what witnesses described as a high rate of speed. Captain James stopped and hurried back to town for medical aid, but the child was dead by the time an ambulance brought her to a local hospital. Death was the direct result of a fractured skull. Frances also appeared to have her left leg broken. Witnesses said that she was knocked several feet into the air and a considerable distance down the highway from the point where the car struck her. Captain James remained in Roanoke until after an investigation of the accident by the Alabama Highway Patrol.
