Smith of Wedowee, Ala., formerly of this county, was drowned in the Tallapoosa River last Friday evening under the following circumstances: A party had been swimming and were coming out when Smith and another, both good swimmers, swam off down the river on a race for a certain point; his companion made the landing; Smith continued down the current going over the fish dam; his head appeared above the water long enough for him to cry out for help, then sank to rise no more in life. His body was found just where he went down, and was brought to New Hope church in this county on Sunday last and interred near the resting place of others of his family who had gone before.
