ALGenWeb Archives File Manager Carolyn Golowka, -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submitted by William Fischer, Jr., February 2001 [This is an unusually detailed obituary for the period, listing birth and marriage dates, surviving children, and other useful information; another article on same page also mentioned the deceased.] MRS. S. TAYLOR GOES TO REST ----------------------- Resting beneath the flowers, in a casket of gray, her white locks smoothed back over the furrowed brow, the lifeless form of Mrs. Sarah C. TAYLOR [nee BATCHFORD] lay last Saturday morning in the home of her son, Mr. Robert E. TAYLOR. Death had come the evening before [7 Nov 1919], peacefully liberating the soul from the cares and labors of life. There is something as beautiful as pathetic in the picture of an aged mother, her work well done, resting in the last, long sleep as the spirit goes to the Immortal Home. Mrs. TAYLOR was born March 3, 1841, and was married Feb. 14, 1858, to Mr. Wm. V. TAYLOR [b. 18 Sep 1837], who died Oct. 2, 1907. Five sons were born to them, one [W. J. TAYLOR, 4 Aug 1868-15 Dec 1880] dying at 13 [actually 12] years of age. The surviving children are Dr. James R. TAYLOR [4 Dec 1860-12 Mar 1937], Mr. Robert E. [Emmet] TAYLOR [4 Feb 1866--2 Oct 1941], Mr. Val TAYLOR and Dr. John L. [Lester?] TAYLOR [4 Aug 1880--18 Jul 1960]. They were present at the funeral and, assisted by two neighbors, acted as pall bearers in laying the remains away. At a reunion held the past summer all members of the family were present, except one grandchild, including sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. TAYLOR was a charter member of the Christian church at Lebanon, oganized [sic] in 1863 or 1864 [31 Mar 1864]. All the members of her immediate family belonged to the same church in later years. She was an humble, consistent christian [sic] woman, whose nobility of character impressed all who knew her. A short service was held at the home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Mr. RUCKER. The remains were then carried to Lebanon for interment, which was made after impressive services had been conducted by Mr. Oliver MOORE, the pastor, assisted by Mr. RUCKER. A large company of friends and former neighbors had gathered to pay their respects and many sympathetic tears were shed, as leave was taken of one whose long life had been filled full of loving deeds. ------------------------------- Excerpt from ANNIVERSARIES IN WHICH SOME OLD PEOPLE FIGURE ------------------------------- On the date above mentioned [8 Nov 1919] the writer attended the funeral of Mrs. Sarah TAYLOR at Lebanon, who was in her 78th year of age. At the close of the service Hon. M.[Martin] P. PITTMAN [18 Jul 1844-28 Mar 1924] remarked to us that fifty-three years ago that night [8 Nov 1866] he and Mrs. PITTMAN [Eliza Ellen Taylor, 12 May 1844-30 Apr 1925] were married and that Mrs. TAYLOR, the deceased, was one of the attendants at the wedding.
