SLEDGE GONE TO REWARD ------------------------------ (Aged Citizen Passed Away Sunday Near This City.) Mr. Shirley N. SLEDGE has fought his last battle. Having waged a good warfare, having kept the faith, he has entered into rest. For nearly 79 years he filled well his several stations in life, and has left a record of which his family may be proud -- one that will live to bless his race. Mr. SLEDGE was one [of] four brothers who served the Southern states on the battlefield during the Civil War. He was twice wounded. Though very feeble, he was able to be present at the reunion of his comrades [Camp Aiken-Smith No. 293, UCV] held in Roanoke April 26th. He was stricken one week ago and lingered till Sunday afternoon, when he was promoted to a higher state of existence, as all believe who knew him, for he was justly regarded as one of the best men in the county. Monday afternoon a short service was conducted at the old home stead, a mile south of town, by Rev. R. E. TYLER and the Masons, after which the remains were escorted by family and friends to Mt. Zion Christian church, of which the deceased was a faithful member for many years. Here a large congregation assembled to pay their tribute of love and respect. The services in the church were conducted by Revs. W. R. KNIGHT and J. D. DOLLAR. The Masonic ritual was used at the grave. “Uncle Shirley” was a man of peace -- a lover of his fellow-man -- yet it was his lot to engage from ‘61 to ‘65 in a horrible fratricidal strife, and to come to the end of his course while the most gigantic war of history is rocking the world. But it is well with him now. The din of battle and the vicisitudes [sic] of life disturb not his rest. Peace to thy ashes -- Soldier, Citizen, Father, Friend -- till we meet again.
