T. M. AWBREY, known locally as “Uncle Mat,” passed away suddenly at the home of his son, J. T. B. AWBREY, Esq. The deceased lacked only one week of being 97 years of age. Mr. AWBREY had an interesting career. He was for more than sixty years a member of the Baptist church at Western, Ga., where the funeral services were conducted at 11 o’clock Sunday morning by two old ministers, in the presence of a large congregation. He had also been a Mason over sixty years. He formerly represented Heard county, Georgia, in the legislature and also in the constitutional convention in that state in 1877. Mr. AWBREY came to West Georgia with his parents in 1818, when the Indians still inhabited this country. Before the enfeeblement of age crept upon him he was an interesting talker on the scenes of the early days of his life. For several years before his death he was blind and nearly deaf. He made his home with his son in this place, where he was constantly and dutifully cared for till called to his reward. ---------------------------- Untitled Short ---------------------------- Dan AWBREY, of Atlanta, was in town Monday, having been called here by the death of his grandfather, Mr. Mat AWBREY. AWBREY in the same column as his obituary, the caption noting that he “Died Early Saturday Morning”
