The first was that of Mrs. Millard F. USSERY, which occurred Friday morning last [9 Feb 1917] at the home of her brother, Mr. J. J. AWBREY, this city, where she was taken some weeks ago, returning from South Carolina, being unable to complete the journey to her home in Wedowee. Her stay in South Carolina under treatment of a specialist failed to benefit her, and the fatal ending of her long illness was not a surprise to her loved ones, though a grievous loss. This good woman leaves a husband and several children, besides her brothers, Messrs. A. M and J. J. AWBREY, of this place, and many other relatives. The remains were carried to Wedowee Saturday, accompanied by a number of relatives and friends and funeral services were held in the Baptist church at that place, attended by a large congregation. Rev. Mr. HAMMETT, the pastor, was in charge of the services. The pastors of the Roanoke Baptist and Methodist churches were present and were invited to take part in the obsequies. The deceased was held in sincere esteem by those who knew her. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 14 Feb 1917, p.1] [Millard F. USSERY, 27 Jan 1857--21 Oct 1924, Lura V.
