Mr. John W. West, an aged farmer living a few miles west of Roanoke, was shot and almost instantly killed by Mr. Charlie Seymour, a resident of Lowell. The shooting occurred in front of the former post office building on Main Street Mr. Seymour was immediately arrested and placed in the city jail. Within an hour he was landed in the county jail to await preliminary trial, which has not yet been set. He states that Mr. West advanced on him with an ax handle and struck him on the neck, showing signs of the blow, so the police say. It is stated that the tragedy grew out of an altercation on the streets of Roanoke two weeks before between Seymour and Tom West, son of the man slain, due to previous trouble. Shortly after Mr. West was killed, and probably before his son had learned of it, Tom West is said to have engaged Tom Seymour, a brother of the slayer, in a difficulty on Chestnut Street. They were separated before any serious damage was done. Funeral and interment of Mr. West occurred at High Pine church Sunday afternoon. Funeral and Burial of Mr. John W. West High Pine, Jan. 29.
