Roanoke News: 
A most grievous accident occurred at Rock Mills on Wednesday last, which resulted 
in the death of a little child of Mr. John Wilkes. Mrs. Wilkes was visiting at 
the house of Mr. Tom Holley, who had been burning brush a short distance from the 
house. The little children ventured so near the fire that the clothing of Mrs. 
Wilkes little daughter ignited, and before the fire could be extinguished, the 
child was so severely burned that death ensued in a short time. In his effort to 
save the child, Mr. Holly's hands were frightfully burned.
