Walton Bell WHATLEY died at his residence in this city at 5 o’clock last Friday afternoon [23 July 1915]. The deceased had been in feeble health for a year or more. He was in his 75th year. Mr. WHATLEY’s life was largely spent in Georgia, where he bore an active part in the affairs of his community and county. He had been a member of the Georgia legislature, of the county school board and had served as justice of the peace many years. Mr. WHATLEY is survived by his wife and a large number of descendants. Few men had more friends than this courtly gentleman of the old school. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church. Saturday afternoon funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church. Dr. [Joseph Wiley] RUCKER delivered a heartfelt eulogy over his deceased friend. The body was then taken to the family burying ground near Evansville, [Troup County,] Ga., for interment. ---------------------------- CARD OF THANKS ---------------------------- We humbly desire to express our deep and lasting love to our neighbors and friends and to the people of Roanoke for the kindness shown us during the sickness and death of our dear husband and father. He was sick and almost helpless more than two years; your visits and words of cheer were a source of joy and comfort to him. God only knows how deeply the family appreciates your interest and patience and help. Dear friends, we pray God’s richest blessings on every one of you. Mrs. W. B. WHATLEY, Roanoke, Ala.; Mrs. L. A.
