H. POOL breathed his last at his home in this place [Roanoke] at 10 o’clock Thursday night, one of our best known and most popular citizens passed away. He was in his 69th year and had spent all his life in Randolph county. Dr. POOL had long been engaged in the practice of medicine and farming and had led a very active life. Until his health began to fail about two years ago he was an active participant in general affairs and would have passed as being many years younger than he was. Dr. POOL’s early advantages were not of the best, but he made good use of them. He was a useful citizen and a loyal friend. He did not hesitat [sic] to take his stand on any public question. Another commendable trait in our deceased friend was his optimism and good cheer, which made him a welcome member of any circle. He was devoted to his family in a marked degree. He leaves besides many relatives, a widow, three sons and one daughter to mourn the decease of a fond husband and father. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a member. A large congregation attended. The pall bearers were chosen from the members of the medical and dental professions. Rev. S. L. DOBBS conducted the services and spoke words of hope and comfort from the promises of the gospel. Rev. F. H. FARRINGTON assisted in the services. A quartette [sic] choir rendered several old hymns. The interment was in the city [Cedarwood] cemetery.
