A gloom of sorrow was cast over this community last Saturday morning by the death of Mr. W. W. STITT, which sad event occurred at his home, near this place. His death was a heavy blow to all. He had only been sick a few days. He was one of our oldest and best citizens, having lived in the county fifty-eight years. Truly a good man is gone. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. W. TUCKER Sunday, after which his body was laid to rest in the Church cemetery at Paran to await the morning of the resurrection. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones and urge them to seek comfort in Jesus, who alone can all our sorrows heal. ---------------------------- High Shoals Hints and Sayings ---------------------------- High Shoals, Ala., March 14. Mr. William STITT died at his home Saturday morning last. We extend to the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy. None but those who have experienced it, know the loss. [Both from The Randolph Toiler (Wedowee, Randolph County, Alabama), 18 Mar 1898, p.3] ---------------------------- IN MEMORY ---------------------------- William Weldon STITT, was born in Fairfield county, South Carolina, November 25th 1832, and departed this life March 12th, 1898. He was married to Miss Margaret A. AKAIN [sic - AIKEN], February 28th, 1857, with whom he lived happily until death. Eleven children were born unto them, six girls and five boys; all are living. It seems strange that he is dead, but he is gone forever. We know that in the midst of life we are in death. He joined the Presbyterian Church at the age of 17 years. He was a true and faithful husband, a kind and loving father. Brother STITT was a model man. He will be sorely missed in Sunday School, Church and other societies. He possessed that meek and quiet spirit which so beautifully characterizes a child of God. He was good and kind to all and a love for the peace and wellfare [sic] of his neighbors formed a striking trait in his character. In his eyes deceit was loathsome; but he delighted in faithfulness. He was loyal to his church and stood firm in the faith. His hope for the future was bright, and he passed away in the faith of the gospel. Glorious hope! Death to him, was not a cruel monster, but a golden key to unlock the gate which led him into endless joys. May we all live the life of the irghteous [sic] and by faith in Christ meet our brother in the bright beyond. Farewell my friend. Thou are gone to the grave, But we will not deplore thee, Though sorrows and darkness encompass thy tomb, The Saviour has passed through its portals before thee, And the lamp of His love is thy guide through the gloom.
