John E. & Frances McGill are shown on the 1860 US Census, Randolph County, page 849B, Almond Post Office, Family #1562 , lines 6-9 as follows: McGill, John E., age 28, male, a farmer, value real estate 300, value personal property 75, born in GA McGill, Frances, age 20, female, housewife, born in AL McGill, William F., age 1, male, born in AL They are living next door to John McGill, age 62, and his wife, Elizabeth, age 50, both born in SC. With them are Zachary T., age 14, James E., age 12, Isaac N., age 10, Samuel W., age 8, and William R., age 26. All children were born in Alabama except for William who was born in GA. John Edward is living with his parents, John & Elizabeth McGill, in Randolph County, Alabama in the 1850 US Census, page 387B, Family #199, lines 9-16, along with brothers William R, Zach T., and James A, and sisters Mary A. and Eliza F. McGill.
