The Roanoke Leader newspaper issue of Wednesday, September 20, 1911: Last Thursday [13 September] evening an old negro preacher Ben Heflin who lived on Route 5 was killed suddenly by falling off a fodder stack. He was regarded by all who knew him as one of the best men of his race in the county.
