V. W. HAMNER, pastor of the Methodist church at Shawmut. ---------------------------- IN HONOR OF MISS HOOPER ---------------------------- One of the pleasing social events of the season was the shower given by Mrs. J. W. JACKSON complimentary to Miss Edna HOOPER Tuesday on the eve of her leaving Roanoke as the bride of Rev. V. W. HAMNER, pastor of the Methodist church at Shawmut. Miss HOOPER has been prominent in social and church work in Roanoke, as well as in her adopted home, Shawmut, where she has been teaching. [Both from The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 16 June 1915, p.1] ---------------------------- [Excerpt from] LARGE THRONG AT THE CHURCH ---------------------------- When this writer arrived at the rear entrance of the Methodist church shortly before six o’clock last Thursday evening [17 June 1915] a great gathering of people had assembled, to the point of overflowing the auditorium. A glance, however, revealed a scene of beauty. The decorative scheme was perfect. It included a profusion of palms, ferns and brides’ and pink roses, with draperies of pink cloth and ropes of green vines entwined. This was the work of Mrs. B. G. SANDERS and Miss Martha PITTMAN. The interesting occasion was the marriage of two of Roanoke’s most popular and esteemed young ladies to well known and promising gentleman of other cities. In both cases Miss Juliabel BEVIS was at the organ, in charge of the musical program. [Portion dealing with marriage of Joe W. CARTER and Mattie Jeff BELCHER deleted] A few minutes after the first ceremony was concluded Miss Agnes MANN rendered a solo as a prelude to the marriage of Miss Edna HOOPER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. HOOPER, to Rev. V. W. HAMNER, pastor of the Methodist church at Shawmut. The ushers upon this occasion were Messrs. Klein HOOPER, Lloyd COLE and Leon DEAN. Miss Rose HOOPER was maid of honor and Mrs. LeGrand FAIRMAN matron of honor. The bride-elect entered from the east door with her father, while the prospective groom appeared at the west door with his best man, Dr. PRITCHARD, of Shawmut. The ceremony was spoken by Rev. W. E. FAUST. The bridal party accompanied by relatives from this place, motored to Shawmut, where a reception was tendered them by the ladies of the Methodist church. Before their leaving, the winsome brides of last Thursday were the recipients of many handsome gifts from friends, as well as delightful social attentions. ---------------------------- LOCAL COMMENT ---------------------------- Miss Rose HOOPER, Mrs. LeGrand FAIRMAN and Klein HOOPER, of Atlanta, spent several days past with home folks, having been called here by the marriage of their sister, Miss Edna HOOPER, to Mr. HAMNER.
