S. L. DOBBS were in demand Sunday [17 Sep 1911] morning on the same happy mission that has brought joy to the hearts of so many couples in all the ages. Accompanied by a newspaper man, the minister drove over to the school building in Lowell at 9:30 o’clock, where a union Sunday school was in session. As the leader of the meeting, who was to be the groom of the occasion, arose from the delivery of a fervent prayer, the visitors entered. The minister explained his presence and asked that the couple to be married present themselves. Mr. William P. AWTREY and Miss Susie E. DUDLEY responded, and in a few minutes were pronounced man and wife, in the presence of the surprised company of witnesses, the affair having been kept a profound secret. Mr. AUTREY [sic] is an excellent christian [sic] gentleman and holds a good position with the HANDLEY Manufacturing Company, being superintendent of one of the departments of the mill. His bride is an estimable young lady and a member of one of the best families of the Lowell community. Mr. and Mrs. AWTREY left Monday afternoon for a week’s visit to Atlanta, Palmetto, West Point and other towns in Georgia. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 20 Sep 1911, p.1] ------- Infant Son AWTREY, 5 Aug 1912--6 Aug 1912, Interred in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke, Randolph Co., Alabama. Five adjacent unmarked graves are perhaps related to this AWTREY family. Lowell, the village surrounding the HANDLEY Manufacturing Company textile mill, was later annexed by neighboring Roanoke.
