Evans Cemetery is on the right side of the road, opposite Ladonia Baptist Church, on the corner of Hwy 80 and Barrow Road. The cemetery is 5.6 miles out Crawford Road from the Russell County Courthouse in Phenix City, Alabama. Evans Cemetery is located in Section 13, Township 17 North and Range 291/2 East. Evans Cemetery is a family-owned cemetery. The deed to the land is currently held by Billy Wayne Williams of Phenix City, Alabama. Information obtained from an excerpt by Dorothy M. Samen printed in Tap Roots, published by the East Alabama Genealogical Society in July, 1974, says that Evans Cemetery, Free Will Cemetery & Hopewell Cemetery are all the same. The oldest part of the cemetery is in the northeast corner, near the original dirt road entrance. Dorothy also states that "no headstones or cement slabs were put on the early graves and most of the old graves cannot even be found today." There are many old, broken and unidentifiable graves in Evans Cemetery. The original portion (north end) of the cemetery remains overgrown and difficult to walk through. Most of these older headstones and markers are undecipherable. Several slabs and headstones have been completely covered with dirt, roots and vines. There is no "order" of the cemetery. Some graves are in definable family plots while others are scattered about. Some are fenced, boardered with concrete but several are placed about. There are many stubs, slabs and broken headstones in the woods at the northern portion of the cemetery that remains overgrown. Graves are not consistently laid out in rows are sections. Records start on the east side of the cemetery, south to north, from Hwy 80 (Crawford Road).
