Know all men by these presents that we Martin Shepherd and his wife Caroline 
Shepherd of the County of Russell and State of Alabama for and in 
consideration of Sixteen hundred & thirty five dollars to us in hand paid by 
Aaron Strickland of the same county and state aforesaid the receipt whereof we 
do hereby acknowledge, do hereby grant bargain sell ?? and confirm unto the 
said Aaron Strickland the following track or parcel of land.  Viz the East 
Fractional half of fractional section twenty one in Township Eighteen and 
Range thirty situate lying and being in the County of Russell and State of 
Alabama and containing three hundred and fifteen acres more or less.  To have 
and to hold the afore granted premises to the said Aaron Strickland his heirs 
and assigns, to their use and behoof forever.  And we do Covenant with the 
said Aaron Strickland his heirs and assigns that we are lawfully seized in fee 
of the afore granted premises, that they are free of all encumbrances, that we 
have a good right to sell and convey the same to the said Aaron Strickland, 
his heirs and assigns and that we warrant and defend the said premises to the 
said Aaron Strickland his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims 
and demands of all persons.  In witness whereof the said Martin Shepherd & 
Caroline Shepherd hath hereunto set their hands & seals this 3rd day of 
January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty three.

I Pleasant G. Clay, a justice of the Peace in and for the County and State 
aforesaid do hereby certify that on the third day of January 1843 the above 
named Martin Shepherd and his wife Caroline Shepherd personally appeared 
before me and acknowledged the above instrument to be their free act and 
deed.  Given under my hand and seal at office the 3rd day of January AD 1843

Witness William Byrd was the father-in-law of Aaron Strickland (who married 
Susan Byrd Aug 1833 in Houston Co., GA.)
