Brewer of Lowndes, J. W. Whitten of Calhoun, and A. H. Graham of Macon visited the burial ground of Southern soldiers who died in prison there. The headboards are numbered and the highest number was 2,999. As these headboards are fast decaying, the gentlemen mentioned copied the inscriptions where they related to Alabamians, and the following is the printed list as read by the copy from the manuscript of notes then taken. -- Each paragraph begins with the number of the regiment, and the letter, after each name, denotes the company of that regiment to which the soldier belonged: FIRST - S.
