Fields Died Tuesday Joseph Augustus Fields, 1209 Thirteenth Street, Phenix City, died at the family residence Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. He had been ill for a long time, but his death came suddenly. Mr. Fields was born January 22, 1859 in Mount Andrew, Ala. where he lived until 5 years of age, when he moved to Phenix City, where he made his home until the time of his death. He was the son of the late W.H. and Jane Elizabeth Stewart Fields. On June 13, 1886 he married Miss Emma Davenport, who preceded him in death by 28 years. The deceased was married the second time to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Howell, of Phenix City, on October 22, 1911, and is survived by her. He had been a shoemaker in this community and had been retired from active work for the past three years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nephews, Elbert Fields, of Thomaston, Ga., and William Fields, of Columbus. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence, Rev. T.J. Gross, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, officiated, interment following in Girard cemetery. The following served as pallbearers: Ed Layfield, A.J. Laney, Sr., J.B. Paker, Jimmie Ramsey, Neal Yates, and Jesse Perry. Honorary: J.M. Anthony, John Scarbrough, Dr. R.S. Watkins, Frank Amerson, Park Dexter, Cohen Higgins, Pete Marcrum, Mr. Rice, and S. Green. Additional Comments: Mr. Fields and his second wife Sarah, were close neighbors and friends of my great-grandparents, Ed and Susie Clyde Layfield. Ed is listed as a pallbearer.
