Rev. Elisha Phillips long a minister in the Methodist Annual Conference of
Alabama, departed this life at Seale in Russell county, Ala., on Sunday evening
November 29th.

Mr. Phillips was several years the Presiding Elder of the Mariana District
during which time and for several years afterward, he resided in this place, so
that the people of the town and country became well and intimately acquainted
with him.

He was, as nearly all the people of this section thought, a very able preacher,
generally rising in his discourses, in argument, elegance of diction and
eloquence, fully up to the dignity of his exalted profession.

Others might scheme and work for the best places, but Mr. Phillips true to his
commission, and his confidence in his call to preach stood silently by, waiting
the action of the powers that be, and then without a murmur, he went forth
sowing the gospel seeds, with a liberal and bountiful hand, leaving the matter
of food and raiment, with him who clothes the lilies of the field, and without
whose knowledge, not even a sparrow falleth.

He made a great many friends in this district and many hearts will be saddened
by the news of his death.

The writer has many times remarked speaking of Mr. Phillips, that he had less of
the serpent  in him, than any man he ever knew.  But the good man, the
companionable friend, the able preacher has fallen, and the places which knew
him will know him no more forever.  

“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”
