To any authorized Miinister of the Gospel, Judge of the Circuit or Probate Courts, or Justice of the Peace for said County: You are hereby authorized and empowered to celebrate the Rites of Matrimony between John Johnson (*should be JohnsTon) and S.J. Davis, and this shall be your sufficient authority for doing so. Given under my hand, this 8th day of February A.D. 1866. J.F(?) Waddell, Judge of Probate. Handwritten: Russell County Alabama, February 6th,1866 'This is to certify that John Johnson has my full consent to marry my daughter, Sara J. Dais, both parties of full age'. Signed: Mr. A. Davis. (*This is Sara Jane Davis' father, Alexander Davis) I, J.J. Cloud do certify that the above named parties were married by me on the 8th day of February A.D. 1866, in the County of Russell, in said State. Witness my hand, the ____ day of___ A.D. 186__. Benton are held and firmly bound unto the State of Alabama, in a penal sum of two hundred dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, and each and every of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated the 8th day of Feby A.D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six. The Condition of the above Obligation is Such, That if there be no lawful cause why John Johnson + Sara J. Davis should not be joined together in the holy union of Matrimony, then this obligatiion to be void: else to remain in full force and virtue. NOTE: The name was JOHNSTON, not JOHNSON, and is given as JOHNSTON on both John Walker Johnston's and Sara Jane (Davis) Johnston's pension records, and her death certificate as on other family and Bible records. Additional Comments: John Walker Johnston and Sara Jane Davis had a number of children, among them was Alice Theodosia Johnston, listed as 'Dosia' on many records. Alice Theodosia married Eugene George Marion Walton, who signed many documents as George Walton, and went by that name.
