Our little village was sad to learn of the death of our good citizen this morning. John Simpson. His death was not a surprise, he had been gradually sinking for several days. His disease was heart failure, he passed away without a struggle. It is a great consolation to his relatives and friends that he died in the triumph of a living faith in our Lord and Savior. He did not belong to any church, but lived the life of a Christian. He leaves an affectionate wife, a good woman. The writer has been personally acquainted with John Simpson for over fifty years and has always regarded him as an honorable upright gentleman. He was about 77 years old, and had been married about 52 years, has raised a nice family of children, who are doing well. He with his father Thomas Simpson, moved to this county from South Carolina 60 years ago and settled near Branchville as a farmer. John Simpson was noted as a good farmer and cotton raiser, has raised a great deal of cotton in his life but died quite a poor man, but he had good and efficient children who cared for him in his old age. It is true that he was not rich in gold dollars, but thank God, he was rich in a spiritual life, which is worth more than all the gold that this world can produce. His dying example is great encouragement to his relatives to press forward by doing right and exercising faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that we may be led by the Holy Spirit, then we will learn to know the worth of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. Learn to govern ourselves on a principle of right, do as we wuld be done by, then we will be blessed with true happiness, which is worth more than all the gold the Rothchilds can command. "A home in heaven what a joyful thought, as the poor man toils in his weary lot." (signed) J.H.
