Those buried were either all, or most likely former patients of the Shelby Springs Hospital (under private ownership). The hospital was established by Civil War physicians and nurses who were fleeing Grant's invasion of Vicksburg, Mississippi. They brought the patients from the Mississippi hospital with them.
