It is asserted that another negro named Earl Fletcher fired the fatal shot. It is stated that Harris was attacked by Fletcher as he came out of the church. Harris drew a pistol, but before he could fire it the weapon was turned toward his own breast and exploded, the bullet going through his heart. It is claimed that the trouble arose over 5 cents.
