Joab Lawler, Representative from Alabama, died at his lodgings in Washington on the morning of Tuesday the 8th inst. The Evening Post Thursday May 10, 1838 (New York, New York) Congressional -- Both houses adjourned today immediately after the announcement of the death of the Hon. Joab Lawler, of Alabama. The funeral will take place at 12 o'clock tomorrow.- Globe of Tuesday. Mr. Lawler was opposed to the administration, and his death leaves the delegation from Alabama equally divided in the House of Representatives. The Pittsburgh Gazette May 12, 1838 (Pittsburg, Pennsylvania) From the Baltimore American HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Washington, May 8, 1838 As soon as the journal of yesterday's proceedings was read in the House of Representatives, Mr. Lyon of Ala., rose, and announced the death of the Hon. Joab Lawler, a member of the House of Representatives from the state of Alabama. Mr. Lawler has been ill but two or three days, and I believe was well and in attendance of his duties when the House adjourned on Thursday last. He died about nine o'clock this morning of bilious pleurisy, -- the same disease which carried off your late Representative, Mr. McKim.-- which is still prevalent in the city, and which has carried off several citizens before this. The city is not very unhealty, but almost every body is suffering with a severe cold. After Mr. Lyon had concluded his eulogy upon the death of the deceased, the usual resolutions were offered to wear crape on the left arm for thirty days, to attend the funeral from the Hall of the House of Representatives tomorrow at twelve o'clock, and to appoint a committee of arrangements to prepare the funeral obsequies. The House adjourned on motion of Mr. Lyon as soon as the resolutions were adopted. IN SENATE May 8, 1838 As soon as the Journal was read Mr. Franklin, the Clerk of the House, announced the death of Mr. Lawler, and the adoption of the House resolutions. Whereupon, Mr. King of Ala., delivered a brief and suitable eulogy upon the character of the deceased. Mr. L. he said, had left a wife and children to mourn his loss. The usual resolutions were adopted, and the Senate adjourned over to to-morrow to attend the funeral. No public business will be transacted before Thursday next.
