Mr. S. was one hundred and one years of age and lived throughout that long life a worthy citizen and consistent church member and died beloved and prepared. Additional Comments: The Weekly Advertiser: Rev. James M. Scott, an aged minister of the Baptist Church, died at his residence near Harpersville, on Wednesday night last, the 10th inst. He was born in Virginia the 12th of January 1777, moved to South Carolina in early life, and camo from that state to this more than fifty years ago. His mind remained strong and vigorous notwithstanding his advanced age, until within a few months of his death. He leaves numerous descendants and many friends to mourn his loss. Note: James M. Scott owned a large amount of land in Shelby County, some of the patents dating back to 1824.
