This file is copyrighted and contributed by: William Fischer, Jr. ===================================================================== August 2005 In the original publication, parenthetical notes are reset to "1" with each new page of the book, even if an individual county is continued on the following page. To reduce confusion, the contributor has added prefix letters of the alphabet, beginning with "A" (such as "A1" for Precinct 19 of Calhoun County) for notes contained on each new page. Information about the note is then found at the end of the article at the matching alphanumeric. Some alphanumerics represent information pertaining to more than one civil division. The large number of notes demonstrates how fluid settlement patterns remained at the opening of the twentieth century. Often a precinct was named for a prominent local natural feature such as a spring, creek, ford, or bluff. When notable natural features were lacking, the most prominent human-built landmark often sufficed, such as a mill, church, or general store. Native American names often retained prominence in the civil division nomenclature. Other times a prominent pioneer family's name carried the honor; the possessive apostrophe was not used (such as "Sibleys Mill" instead of "Sibley's Mill," for Precinct 6 of Baldwin County). Patriotic, historical and Biblical themes, locales, and personalities also abound. Census results were very important to local political and business leaders. Population growth demonstrated that a town/county was "progressive" and therefore worthy of further capital investment; perhaps most important during this era of increasing urbanization was the wooing of new railroad investment, which could make or break a town's existence. Hence, census results showing population declines were often hotly disputed or justified in local newspapers, remembering that some precinct population declines were due to the creation of new precincts whose population was part of their former precincts' 1890 census figures.
