Cemetery is located on hill behind Mardisville Historical Marker. Survey conducted March 15, 2003 by Lisa Allen Baggett, Jay Hudson, Jerry and Linda Mardis. Mardisville, once the seat of justice of the entire Coosa Land District, is now a ghost town with the only remnants of this once thriving town are three cemeteries, including the public cemetery and street names. The town, originally called Jumper's Springs, was home to the Talladega County Land Office, which was established in 1832 after the Creek Treaty of 1832 was ratified. Early Talladega County settlers lived in Mardisville where there were two churches, boys and girl's academies, a tavern/barding house and numerous stores with numerous of lawyers and physicians in residence. The town was renamed Mardisville shortly after 1832 to honor Samuel Wright Mardis. Samuel was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee in 1800 and was the son of Reuben Mardis and Martha Wright. Prior to 1823, Samuel relocated to Alabama and was elected in 1823 to the Legislature of the State of Alabama. From 1831 to 1835 he was a member of the House of Representatives, from Shelby County, Alabama, in the United State Congress. He was also a witness to the 1832 Creek Treaty. After Samuel left congress in 1835 he moved to the city of Talladega and died in 1836 at the young age of 36. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Talladega, Alabama, next to his half brother, Isaac Estill. He left a widow, Mary Eliza Taylor and three small children. The town was abandoned slowly after the city of Talladega was elected as the Seat of Justice for the County of Talladega, January 1834. Mardisville residents moved closer to the city of Talladega where churches and schools were located, the courthouse and retail and commercial enterprises. The post office in Mardisville was finally closed in 1881 and the majority of all the structures have been destroyed. The public cemetery contains the remains of many of the early Talladega pioneers. Included in these are Isaac Killough, Levi Lawler, Henry Sims, James G. Hancock, Captain William H. Hancock, and M. P. Gaddie. =================================================================== Burt, Fannie C.
