No man living or dead has had his home in Talladega longer and without break in the record. When he died, he lacked only a few months of having been a faithful, honest, unpretending, consistent member of the Presbyterian church of Talladega for fifty years. The writer knows no one who was more universally respected. Mr. Scott was a modest, quiet man. No one held more firmly and unflinchingly to his own political or personal convictions than he or respected more the honest opinions of those who differed from him. He was born in New Haven, Conn., and on the 3rd of this month (February) was seventy-nine years of age. He came to Talladega in May 1834. He was a tailor by trade, and an honest man and capable workman. For Talladega and surrounding counties, he and his brother made our wedding suits for near half a century. In 1847, he was married to Miss Margaret Shelley, a daughter of our first Circuit Court Clerk, Capt. Jacob D. Shelley. For forty-five years they lived together in peace and love. One who stood by them on the bridal floor and stood by his dead friend in his house in the last hour, and by his grave when interred, offers this imperfect tribute to his friend. He was buried in our cemetery on the 19th of February 1891. The attendance at the church and cemetery marked the affection of our community for their old, beloved fellow citizens. The remarks of Dr. Houston, his pastor, at the church, were strikingly beautiful, touching and appropriate. Old Friend.
