He was the son of Tillman S. Simmons and Narcissa Jane Brewer. He grew to manhood in Tallapoosa County. His father was a Confederate veteran. John was living with his parents at Jones Crossroads in 1870. His family lived in Rome Precinct of Tallapoosa in 1880. John had two brothers and two sisters. He grew up on the farm. He was married to Emma Pearl Saxon in Troup County, Georgia in 1890. John and Emma Pearl lived in the Rome area of Tallapoosa County. They started a family and by 1900 they had three children. John's father in law, William James Saxon, died in 1894. After his death, John worked on and managed his mother in law's farm. John's father became very ill and died in 1904. In 1917 John lost his mother. His parents were both buried at Philadelphia Church Cemetery near Smith Station in Lee County, Alabama. John and Emma Pearl had nine children. John passed away in 1931 in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama. He was buried at Waverly cemetery in Lee County,Alabama.
