Hammack Grave Old Schoolhouse Cememtery Tallapoosa County There is a small cemetery in Tallapoosa County. It took me 20 years of looking to find it...
This grave is in the middle of some woods on a farm 3.5 miles east of Eagle Creek Baptist Church.
There are only a few graves there. The photo is of my great grandfather. We found the cemetery,
but some cousins went back and dug through 75 years of leaves to find it. There are lots of little
cemeteries like this and they are called all kinds of things.
In his obituary this was called "The Old Schoolhouse Cemetery", and if not for a retired game warden,
I would never have been blessed with this picture. The only other grave I remember was for a baby Bence.
There are so few graves there... and time and the elements are stealing them from the future.
His stone reads: John C. Hammock Borned 1853 Died April 4, 1909 Loving memorial of our dear father. Obituary in the "Spot Cash", the Dadeville, AL newspaper for April 23, 1909. Found in the Tallapoosa Co. Courthouse in June 2000, by Carolyn Adams. "Mr. John Hammock. Mr. John Hammock died at his home in Agricola community on Sunday, April 4th, and was buried at what is known as the old schoolhouse burying ground, in Beat 6, on the following day. Mr. Hammock was sick for a long time, and bore his afflictions with patience and fortitude. Some time before his death he expressed himself as hopeless concerning his chance of living, but (w)as perfectly reconciled to death. He spoke with assurance of the future and rejoiced at the prospect of release from pain. He was for years a member of the Christian church, and lived an exemplary life. Funeral services were conducted by the writer. The sympathy of all friends and acquaintances goes out to the grief stricken family and relatives. Henry M. Stevenson"
