RAY 1856 The State of Alabama Tallapoosa County Know all men by these presents, that I, Susanah Besinger, for and in consideration of one hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid, by George W. Ray, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, do hereby give, grant, bargain, sell, enfeoff, and confirm, unto the said George W. Ray, his heirs, the following land to wit, the South East fourth of the West ½ of the South East quarter of Section twenty seven, 27, in Township twenty two and range twenty two East in the Tallapoosa Land district subject to sale at Montgomery Ala. Said Land lying and being in the county of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama, To have and to hold, the afore granted premises, to the said George W. Ray, his heirs and assigns To their use and behoof forever, And I so covenant with the said George W. Ray, his heirs and assigns that I am lawfully seized in fee of the afore granted premises, That they are free of all encumbrances, That I have good right to sell and convey the same to the said George W. Ray, his heirs and assigns, and that I will warrant and defend the said premises to the said George W. Ray, his heirs and assigns forever, against the lawful claims and demands of all persons. In witness whereof I, the said Susannah [sic] Besinger have hereunto set my hand and seal the 30th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six. Susanah Besinger-her mark The State of Alabama Tallapoosa County I, Luke Davenport an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said County, hereby certify that Susanah Besinger, whose name is signed to the foregoing conveyance, and who is known to me, acknowledged before me, on this day that being informed of the conveyance, she executed the same voluntarily, on the day the same bears date. The foregoing conveyance was filed in office for record 30th January 1856 & duly recorded February 22nd 1856 Simeon Goolsby, Judge of Probate Additional Comments: GENEALOGICAL NOTES Mrs. Susanah Crouch, the widow of Jacob Crouch, married William Ray on 15 March 1845 in Tallapoosa Co., AL. She married Edward Bessinger on 20 Dec 1852 in Tallapoosa Co., AL. She appears on the 1860 Tallapoosa Co., AL census living with Joel Price and his wife Nancy. It may be that Nancy is the daughter of Susanah and Jacob, Also living in the household is William Crouch. George W. Ray married Martha Couch in 1851 in Tallapoosa Co., AL. Perhaps the transcriber miss-read the bride’s last name and Martha was another child of Susanah and Jacob. The land sold in this deed was purchased by Susanah Ray on 10 Jun 1848 from the Federal Government.
