D. 1861 between John Abrams of the one part and Samuel T. Ray of the other part and both of the county and state aforesaid. Witnesseth that the said John Abrams the better to secure the payment of a certain promissory note made by him and payable to Samuel T. Ray for twenty one & 60/100 dollars due on the twenty fifth of December 1861 hath this day sold to said S. T. Ray and his assigns, two young cows. Then should the said Abrams will and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said S. T. Ray or his assigns the said note together with interest due therein, then this mortgage to be void, but if the same Abrams fail to pay said note as aforesaid then the said Ray or his assigns is to sell said cows at public out cry to the highest bidder after giving ten days notice of the time and place of sale and apply the proceeds [can’t read] to the payment of said note and interest or so much thereof as may be necessary to satisfy said debt and cost. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this day and date above written. John Abrams-his seal Signed sealed and delivered in presence of The State of Alabama Tallapoosa County I Phillip Wolf a Justice of the Peace hereby certify that John Abrams whose name is signed to the foregoing conveyance and who is known to me and [can’t read] before me on this day that being informed of the contents of the conveyance he executed the same voluntarily on the day the same bears date.
