Ray and Elizabeth J. Ray his wife for and in consideration of the sum of Five hundred dollars to us in hand paid by T H. Howell the receipt whereof we do hereby bargain [sic] hereby sell acknowledge and convey unto the said T. H. Howell his heirs and assigns the following lands to wit; The East half of the North East Quarter of Section fifteen (15) Township twenty two (22) Range twenty two (22) East in the Tallapoosa Land District. To have and to hold the aforesaid premises to the dais T. H. Howell his heirs and assigns forever. And we the said William M. Ray and Elizabeth J. Ray his wife do covenant with the said T. H. Howell his heirs and assigns that we are lawfully seized with afore granted premises that they are [free] from all encumbrances and we will warrant and defend the title to the said T. H. Howell his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of ourselves our heirs and assigns and all other persons whatsoever. In Testimony whereof we the said William M. Ray and Elizabeth J. Ray have hereunto set our hand and seals the 28th day of September A. D. 1871. William M. Ray-his mark Elizabeth J. Ray-her mark In presence of J. M. Berry John M. Moran The State of Alabama Tallapoosa County I Allen D. Sturdivant Judge of the Probate Court for said County hereby certify that James M. Berry a subscribing witness to the foregoing conveyance known to me appeared before me this day being duly sworn stated that William M. Ray and Elizabeth J. Ray the grantors in the conveyance voluntarily executed the same in his presence and in the presence of the other subscribing witness on the day the same bears date, that he attested the same as a witness in the presence of the grantors and [can’t read] of the other witness and that such other witness subscribed his name as a witness in his presence.
