Echol's Company of Provost Guards, Alabama Volunteers. This Company subsequently became Company A , 2nd Regiment Alabama Reserves. Muster in Roll dated Jan 1, 1864 Montgomery, Alabama age 17 years Where Tallapoosa Co. By whom Capt Jn H. Echols Period For the war. Additional Comments: the regiment was composed of for the most part of very young men. Under Colonel Olin Rice,the regiment was later changed to the 63rd Alabama Infantry. The 63rd fought in General Thomas' Brigade at Fort Gaines and Spanish Fort, losing a large number in killed and wounded. Relieved at Spanish Fort by Holtzclaw's Brigade they were sent to Blakeley,where after enduring the privations and perils of the siege of Blakeley, they were captured and exchanged a few days before the surrender of the Department of the Gulf. Tillman was one of 100 men remaining in the 63rd. Spelling of first name on this record was Tilman S. Simmons. Tillman achieved the rank of Corporal.
