I have a copy of a letter J.M. written during the civil war to his mother, Martha, who lived in Tallapoosa Co. Martha is buried in Guthrie cemetary in Tallapoosa Co. The letter is as follows and the spelling is exactly as written: Envelope: Mrs. Martha An Goldin Barnsville P.O. Tallapoosa County, Alabama October the 17 1862 Chatom Co. Service, Savannah, Georgia Dear Mother, It is with pleasure that I seat myself to let you know that I am well and hoping when these lines come to you they will find you and all the connections well. I am just out of the hospital. I had the chills. I had 3 chills, but they did not hurt me much. I received a letter from you yesterday that was dated the fifth of October. I was sorry to hear that Becky was sick. Tell howdy for me. Tell her that I was glad to hear that I had a new Aunt, and tell John to mind when he walks and stay on his side of the branch. If he don't he had better and tell Jimmy howdy. Tell him and Sis to rite to me and Frank. Frank & Mark ain't well. They are getting better. I was mity glad to hear that Uncle Caleb was getting better and was at work. Tell him I say just stick to his work an it will make a man of him. Well you wanted to know if I was satisfied and I am well satisfied here because it is a good company and the easyest service in the world. Tell Sissy that I received the thanks and was glad of them. She sent me a thousand. They was more than I could put in my pocket at once. Well I must stop my foolishness. This is the 6 letter that I have rote to you and haven't got but one from you. Well,maw, Warren Johnston & Mose Hornsby was here. They told me you was well. Lientenant Hornsby is gone home on 20 days ferlow. He said he would bring my trunk if he could get it to the depot. I sent your letter and some envelopes by him. Get Uncle Jim to send my trunk to the depot for him and tell Uncle Joe to send me a good pair of shoes for I can't get them here for less that 15 or so dollars a pair, and you may send me some socks if you have got any. Well, I must come to a close for this time. I rite you a letter every week and sometimes tell all my inquiring friends howdy if there should be any.
