Sturdivant, Judge of the Probate Court of said County and Clerk ex-officio, thereof, hereby certify that John Wheeless, whose name and genuine signature appears to the within annexed certificate was at the time of attesting the same as Justice of the Peace, in and for said county duly commissioned and qualified and that as such, his acts and doings are entitled to full faith and credit. Welsh (sic) case of John Wheeless, Dadeville, Ala. (Second Page of First Document) State of Alabama Tallapoosa County On this 24th day of October 1863, personally appeared before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid, Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic) who after being sworn according to law deposes and says that she is the widow of James R. Welsh (sic) deceased, who was a private of Captain Holstein, Company D, 34th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Mitchell in the service of the Confederate States in the present war with the United States; that the said James R. Welsh (sic), entered the service at Shelbyville in Tennessee on or about the 15th day of March 1863, and was killed in battle near Chickamauga, Georgia, on or about the 20th of September 1863. That Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic) makes this disposition for the purpose of obtaining from government of the Confederate States, whatever may have been due the said James R. Welsh (sic) at the time of his death, for pay bounty or other allowances for his services as such soldier aforesaid. Sworn to and subscribed Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic) to before me, the 24th day of October 1863. John Wheeless, J.P. And on the same day and year aforesaid also appeared before me a Justice of the Peace as aforesaid, John P. Loyd, who is well known to me and whom I hereby certify to be a person of veracity and credibility, who having been by me duly sworn says on oath that he is well acquainted with Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic), the claimant, and also well knew for ten years James R. Welsh (sic), the deceased soldier herein mentioned and that the statements made under oath by said Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic) the claimant, as to her relationship to the said deceased soldier is true and correct in every particular to the best of his knowledge and belief and that he the said John P. Dear Sir, At the request of Mrs. E. E. Welsh (sic), enclosed I sent you the description List for pay etc. of her late deceased husband, Jas. R. Welsh (sic), of Co. D. 34th Regiment of Ala. Volunteers; her application has been filed in your office. You will please, so soon as her claim can be settled to forward a certificate for the amount due to Elizabeth E. Welsh (sic), Dadeville, Ala. in care of John Wheeless. And you will oblige me very much. W. H. Holstein as appears to the within descriptive lists is given that he was _____ the Holstein and is well ______ with his signature. Toliver Madden I, the undersigned, Judge of the Probate Court for said County, hereby certify that Toliver Madden, whose name and genuine signature affixed the above ______ certificate appeared before me this day and deposed to the facts set forth therein In test______ thereof I have hereunto ________ and affixed the seal of the said Court at office the 11 day of May 1864. Vols., born in the State of Georgia, Baalden (Baldwin??) County, aged 36 years, 5 feet 8 inches high, complexion fair, eyes grey, hair dark, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. Was enlisted at Dadeville Ala, by Capt. J. M. Smith, Feb. 12th/63 to serve three years or the war. Killed at Chickamauga, Georgia, Sept. 20th/63. Was last paid by Maj. Peyton, A 2, M, to the 30th June/63. There is due him day from said date to the time of his death being 2 mos and 20 days @ $11.00 for ____ $29.33. Commutation from Feb. 12th/63 to Sept. 20th/63, being 7 mos & 8 days at $11.13 7/12 for 2 mos. $81.90. He is due the Confederacy for clothing drawn $15.00. Total $110.23 1/3 - $15.00. Amount due $95.23 1/3 $95.00 W. H. Holstein, Capt. Comding Co. D. 34th Ala. Regt. I hereby certify that James R. Welch, a private in Capt. W. H. Holstein’s Co. D, 34th Regt., born in the State of Georgia, Bawldin (sic - Baldwin?) county, aged 36 years, 5 feet 8 inches high, complexion fair, eyes grey, hair dark, & by occupation when enlisted a farmer. Was enlisted at Dadeville, Ala, by Capt. J. M. Smith, Feb. 12th, 1863, to serve three years or the war. Killed at Chickamauga, Georgia, Sept. 20th 1863. Was last paid by Maj.
