Holdridge holdapril77@gmail.com April 15, 2024, 12:13 am The Dadeville Record, May 19, 1955, Page 1., Accessed By April Holdridge May 15, 1955 Man Is Killed Friday When Car Plunges Into Tallapoosa River A former resident of Alexander City was killed when the car he was driving plunged into the Tallapoosa River about 8:10 a.m. Friday. The car was evidently traveling at a high rate of speed when it went over the bank at the river hill bridge near. Lake Hill Inn just missing the bridge approach. The dead man was identified as James W. Galloway, Rt. 1 Annis-ton, by County Coroner Robert Pless. Mr. Galloway was. 23 years old and a former residennt of Alexander City. The accident was investigated by Alabama Highway Patrolmen C. V. Coggins and Ray Thornell who said that a witness told them the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and plunged about 200 feet into 40 feet of water. The car was traveling toward Dade-ville from Alexander City. It was extremely difficult to find the exact spot the car went into the river as investigating officers were unable to find any tire tracks. The automobile was pulled from the water about 10:30 a.m. Friday, nearly two hours after officers and volunteers began their labors to retrieve it. The front of the car was badly wrecked from the impact when the vehicle hit the water. Mr. Galloway was in the front seat, one of his legs protruding out one window. It is thought that he was alone. The cause of death had not been determined as this paper went to press. Mr. Galloway's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Galloway, live at Bettsville. Their son had come home to spend the weekend from Anniston where he was employed. Survivors include the widow; two sons, Jerry -and Billy; a daughter, Linda Dale; the parents: sister, Mrs. Lula Mae Kitchens, Alexander City; three brothers, Max and Nathan, Alexander City, Frank Galloway, Talladega; and a host of other relatives.
