Barnett Dies of Heart Attach Last Saturday Was county superintendent of education here for 28 years; funeral Sunday. G.M. Barnett, for 28 years CountySuperintendent of Education of this County, died suddenly last Saturday afternoon at his home in LaFayette of heart attack. his death came as a distinct shock to his numerous friends. in Chambers County and the entire State. He was 62 years of agae. Funeral services were conducted from the LaFayette Methodist Church lasts Sunday afternoon at three o'clock with the Rev. K.N. Matthews, pastor, and the Rev. A. H. Nabors officiating. Interment was in the laFayette cemetery with Cutler in charge. Active pallbearaers were Will O. Walton, J.C. Grady, D.T. Tatum, H.A. Carlton, J.M. Briscoe and Sam H. Oliver. Honrary pallbearers were Joe Canier, Charles Finney, T.H. Kirby, J.P. Hill, P.C. Ramsey, E.L. Boyd, W.T. Draper, J.B. Messer, W.B. Taunton and J.V. Chambers. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs R.M. Walker, Roanoke; Miss Algie-Merle Barnett, Alexander City; one sister, Mrs. T.J. Warren, AlexanderCity. Mr. Barnett was at his home alone when stricken. He was able to call al ocal physician, however, but lived only a few moments after he arrived. Born in TAllapoosa County February 2, 1879, Mr. Barnett came to Chambers County in 1901 where he taught in the Truitt School. He was elected County Superintendent of Education in 1913, serving until last January. Mr. Barnett was one of the pioneers in the founding of Alabama's modern educational system, and was an early advocate of rural school consolidaation. He had served as vice president of Alabama Education Association and at the time of his death was one of the three trustees of that organization. Retiring from his long tenure as county superintendent last january he accepted a position with the lanett City Schools. He was a member of the board of stewards of the First Methodist Church of LaFayete. A large number of sorrowing friends from over the State gathered last Sunday afternoon to pay a last tribute to a man whom they all loved and respected. His going marks the end of a careerof service to his fellow man. News of Mr. Barnett's death was recieved as the loss ofone of the State's most beloved and useful citizens by educational leaders in Montgomery. He was an outstanding county superintendent and a pioneer of educational progress, said Dr. A.H. Collins, state Superintendent of Educaation.
