John A. Mitchell Dies At Home Here

Prominent Manufacturer Passes Away Wednesday Following Long Illness-Funeral This
Afternoon

John A. Mitchell, 68, prominent Columbus manufacturer, died yesterday morning at
8:30 o'clock at his home, 1232 Third avenue, following along illness.

Mr. Mitchell had been in ill health since the first of last November.  He was at
Johns Hopkins hospital at Baltimore for five weeks, returning home last
Christmas.   For the past two months he had been confined to his bed, but
Tuesday night he was apparently in better health than in many weeks. During the
night his condition grew worse and he died at 8:30 o'clock.  His death was
learned yesterday with sincere regret by his many friends.  He was well known in
Columbus, having taken an active affair in civic affairs. 

John Archer Mitchell was born in Dadeville, Ala., March 24, 1855.  He moved to
Columbus from Dadeville about thirty years ago and had lived here since that
time.  He was active in affairs of the First Baptist church and was a charter
member of the Columbus Elks Club. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.  

Until about twelve years ago, Mr. Mitchell was president of the Hamburger Cotton
Mills, now known as the Bradley Manufacturing Company.  In 1917 Mr. Mitchell
organized the Mitchell Hosiery Mills, and held the position of president until
he became ill. 

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, who before her marriage, was Miss Annie
Hamburger, of Columbus, and two sons, John A. Mitchell, Jr., and Louis H.
Mitchell, both of Columbus; also two brothers, R. A. Mitchell, of the Alabama
Power Co., of Birmingham, and S. Z. Mitchell, of the Electric Bond and Share
company. of New York City, besides other relatives of Columbus and of Alabama. 

Funeral services will be held at the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. 
They will be conducted by Dr. John A. Davison, pastor of the First Baptist
church.  Interment will be in Linwood cemetery. 

The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: George C. Palmer, Chas. B.
Woodruff, Dr. J. C. Wooldridge, Dana Blackman, Reuben Webb and Dr. Wm F. Jenkins.
