"Don't both of you get mad at the same time. If one of you gets mad, one of you hold your tongue." Baker said he heeded that advice and enjoyed a marriage of 48 years and two months with Dona Mae Baker before her life was taken by cancer. They had three children, and those children's families and family friends will honor Baker with a party today, as he turns 90 years old. Living long enough to see the administrations of 17 presidents, the Roxana community resident recalls other sage words he picked up along life's way. Baker quotes Proverbs 15:1 from memory. "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." He has lived a life of hard work, either on the farm, in saw mills or cotton mills, and has resided most of his life in his native Tallapoosa County. The house he lives in now has been home for 52 years. Baker has frequent visitors, chatting with them on his front porch. When the weather is nice, he sits out front in a chair as his loyal dog, Buck, lies nearby. He still reads and keeps up with the daily news. Tuesday he talked in detail about the trail of the man charged in the Oklahoma City bombing incident and about the latest efforts by congressmen to pass or thwart a balanced budget amendment. He said he reads the Bible and tries to do what it says. "The Bible ain't no good to you if you don't live by it," he said. "I'm old, but I'm not crazy," he said. "I know right from wrong, and I'm proud that I do." Additional Comments: submitted by Anita J.
