On August 14, 1862, at New Site, Alabama, he was conscripted into the Confederate service. He was sent to Virginia and assigned to Company G, "Autauga Rifles," of the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia. He was captured July 4, 1863, and taken to Fort McHenry at Baltimore, Maryland, where he was paroled and released on July 9, 1863. On June 12, 1864, "Zeke" Abbott enlisted in Company H of the 8th Confederate Cavalry at Marietta, Georgia.(He had to furnish his own horse!) The 8th Confederate Regiment was composed of companies from Mississippi and Alabama. The Alabama companies referred to themselves as the 8th Alabama, and Company H was composed of men from Tallapoosa and Randolph counties. On August 10th the Confederates started out on what is often referred to as "Wheeler's Last Raid." During the raid, on September 6, 1864, "Zeke" was once again captured near Woodbury, Tennessee. An interesting account of his participation in the engagements (while riding the horse he supplied) and his eventual capture can be found in A WAR STORY, by Ben Darsey. After his capture he was sent to Nashville and then to Louisville, Kentucky. On September 15, 1864, "Zeke" was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, a prisoner of war camp, located near Columbus, Ohio. He was paroled and released on June 11, 1865, and returned to Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
