Mary Elizabeth is the granddaughter of a veteran of the War of 1812, Michael Leonard Shockley, who married Frances O’Rear, in December 1808, Greene County, Georgia. She is also the great- granddaughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Jonathan Shockley of the Richard Shockley and Ann Boyden lineage of Somerset, Maryland. It is interesting that Mary Elizabeth Shockley is also the great-granddaughter of Revolutionary War soldier Daniel O’Rear of the John O’Rear, (Stafford County, Virginia) lineage, and Susan Gouch/Gooch, a daughter of the prominent Gouch/Gooch family of Virginia and North Carolina. Daniel O’Rear served in Colonel Patrick Henry’s Virginia Regiment, and a son, Robert O’Rear, was in the Battle of the Horse-Shoe (Horseshoe Bend, Dadeville, Alabama), and the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815. Mary Elizabeth Shockley married John Ezekial “Zeke” Abbott/Abbett, March 5, 1856, in Pike County, Georgia, and sometime between 1856-1860 they moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama, and raised a large family. Mary Elizabeth Shockley died April 6, 1912, and is buried beside her husband in an unmarked grave at Eagle Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Dadeville, Alabama.
