[Marriage Bond]
The State of Alabama, Tallapoosa County.
     KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we, James M Downs & [blank] are held 
and firmly bound unto His Excellency Reuben Chapman Governor of said State, 
and his successors in office, in the penal sum of Two Hundred Dollars, for 
payment of which well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, and each and 
every of our heirs, executors or administrators, jointly and severally, firmly 
by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated the 26 day of September A 
D. 1849
     The condition of the above Obligation is such, that if there be no lawful 
cause why James M Downs & Jane Hammock should not be joined together in the 
holy union of Matrimony, then this Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain 
in full force and virtue.

TO ANY ORDAINED MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL, JUDGE OF THE COUNTY OR CIRCUIT COURTS, 
OR JUSTICE OF THE PEACE, IN AND FOR SAID COUNTY-Greeting:
     You are hereby authorised to celebrate the Rites of Matrimony between 
James M Downs & Jane Hammock
     And this shall be your sufficient authority for so doing. Given under my 
hand and seal, this 26th day of Sept A.D. one thousand eight hundred and forty 
9 and of American Independence the 74th year
